CHAPTER 8

Riley’s buzz was slowly wearing off and he was now acutely aware of the groups of people huddling around the DJ booth, watching him. He never once accounted for the fact that people would pay attention to him before they were too drunk to care. Keeping his back to them, he shot a warning glance toward Veronica who smiled at him and waved. Yeah, that’s real helpful. He shook his head. He’d have to make her scream extra hard for the shit she put him through tonight. He bet his dick to her ass would do the trick. He smirked at the thought.

Taking a step back, he scrutinized and admired his work so far. It was coming easy to him tonight. The lines were straight, intentional. The rhythm of the image was in sync with the image in his mind’s eye. And the colors were absolutely fantastic. He normally didn’t use so many colors on a single canvas, not since the surfing mural he’d done, but because this was for a DJ he’d felt mixing colors was a visual play on the way DJ Spin mixed beats. So far, it was working, too.

His thoughts momentarily wandered back to his surf mural and the girl he’d found staring at it. As much as he hated to admit it, she kept sneaking up in his mind when he least expected it. It was distracting as hell.

He swiped his arm across his forehead and gazed out at the ocean. The waves were a decent size, consistent in their patterns. They were the perfect kind for surfing and he wanted nothing more than to do just that. Right now. He wanted to rip his shirt off over his head—which he’d kept on while working this time since there was a crowd—grab a board from the Amped tent, and rush headfirst into the water, which he guessed would be fairly cold. But that only made it more exciting.

With a sigh, he picked up another spray can and made more marks on the canvas. Damn, I could really go for a drink right about now. Time to face the world, he thought as he turned around and scanned the crowd for Jackson. Riley wanted his friend to go get him a beer.

Riley was both impressed and shocked with how packed the beach was. It was shoulder to shoulder people. Most of them dancing on the wooden platform that had been brought in to be used as a dance floor. Some were crowded around the bar while others mingled and flirted near the pillar tables.

Riley’s gaze made another sweep of the beach when he finally caught sight of Jackson. He was standing at a table with two girls. They were both on the taller side. One had long, pin-straight blonde hair, and the other had—his eyes widened in surprise.

“No fucking way,” he muttered to himself. It was the girl he’d caught admiring his mural. And she was staring at him right now. What were the odds? He let a small grin creep onto his lips and then quickly hid it.
